Maaan, for a lot of white evangelicals, Donald Trump winning is a MUST for them becuase they believe if he doesn’t then Christianity in America will die. It’s wild that folks are hanging the future of Christianity on a MAN!

Christianity has lost major cultural influence and power and what they see in Trump’s win is a way to maintain power & influence. They are scared to death of what will happen if “liberals” take over. To them Christianity must win by physical and political conquest.

And if not “CHRISTIANITY IN AMERICA IS DOOMED!!!!” This really is the mindset; so it’s a win by any means strategy now which is why you get this downplaying/justification of his character issues that they would never give to their political opponents. We saw that with Clinton(s)

The problem is that folks want worldly and cultural POWER and they use Christianity to get it by proxy. Evangelicals had it but now that it’s slipping away you are starting to see that it was never mainly about Jesus more than it was about power.

If this was about Jesus then we would understand that Christianity NEVER EVER needed cultural and political power in order to thrive; in fact the wonder was that God caused it to thrive in the midst of those who sought to explicitly stomp it out.

But we don’t want that type of Christianity... Why? Becuase America has taught us that Christianity always wins here; It’s those other poor countries/nations that actually persecute their Christians - not us. Now that power is slipping they compromise biblical ethics to keep it

And there’s no way that you can discuss American Christianity apart from race - whiteness was centered from its inception. Black Christians were used to worshipping, loving God and neighbor and fighting sin on the margins while under persecution.

Let’s us not forget that “Christian” masters would whip black slaves if they were caught reading and or teaching others how to read - even if the reading was The Bible itself. Oh, also, black churches were BOMBED by others who claimed Christianity.

Let’s not forget what white moderates told MLK time and time again which is why he had to set them straight in “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” - which imo is one of the greatest treatises ever written https://www.africa.upenn.edu/Articles_Gen/Letter_Birmingham.html

I think it’s clear that black Christians througout history understood that the power in which The Kingdom would come in was a power that the world wouldn’t even acknowledge. It would seem insigficigant to them - you know, like a grain of mustard seed

The kingdom doesn’t come by strongman ideology - this very idea of what The Kingdom come would be like in this world is the very thing that caused folks to be blind to the fact that Jesus was actually the savior they waited for. Why? They wanted a Strongman!

And they failed to realize that Jesus was a strongman but His strength and power didn’t come in the way that some of the Jews expected by way of cultural dominance and worldly power. I’m affraid american evangelicalism has made the same mistake.

Jews wanted the savior to be a strongman and dismissed Christ becuase he didn’t meet their worldly expectations. I’m afraid American evangelicals have done the same but see Trump as the strongman that “Christianity” needs to fight the culture war for them.

Sadly some have conflated those “Christian” values with nationalism, racism, xenophobia, partisanism, etc and think it’s Christianity. And as they invest in their strongman with their win “by any means necessary” approach they blind themselves to what Christ is doing.

Could it be that God is killing what Frederick Douglass called “...The Christianity of this land” so that the true “Christianity of Christ” would thrive - a Christianity that thrives in kingdom power even amid persecution - a Christianity that takes holiness & justice seriously..

And while this is happening American evangelicals are desperately giving mouth to mouth to a Christianity that needed to die a long time ago - why? Becuase that Christianity came with values built in that are far from biblical but benefit them - white Christians especially.

Let that mug die and let a wholistic pure Christianity be brought forth - one that is still committed to biblical fidelity and Gospel truth while also taking serious the command to love neighbor and have a heart for the vulnerable among us like God does.
