"autistic people can be held accountable for their actions" and "there are situations where autistic ppl may not know theyre wrong or cant help the way they act, and may need to be treated with extra patience & care to explain what the problem is" are both true statements
tired of ppl using autism as an excuse to be disgusting and hateful when theyre faced with new information. but im ALSO tired of people pulling the "who cares if theyre autistic theyre just like anyone else" excuse to harass and cancel people who dont know they've done wrong
ive had people cut me off, or say disgusting things about me behind my back, in situations where they could have messaged me and explained why i was wrong and i would have apologized and improved. most of us cant understand social cues. THAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST AUTISM THINGS
its okay to be exhausted with explaining a seemingly obvious issue to someone, but autistic people cant just google social cues. a lot of us need help. dont infantilize us, dont treat us like aliens, but there are still ways to make things like this easier to understand for us.
please know when i said "cancel" in one of my earlier tweets i was moreso referring to callout culture and not cancelling. that was a mistake on my part.
im muting this and i will check up later but fellow people with the tism feel free to share ur experiences with ways to make things like this more accessible to autistic people
another note while im thinking about it; autism doesnt just "heal" when youre older. i dont care HOW old someone is, if they are autistic and struggling it is not your place to make them "figure it out" themselves. you could be 3 or 30. it never goes away.
