Christians have themselves to thank.
They abandoned entertainment as a mission field. They discouraged their kids from the arts. They swept each other up in unfounded hysteria to signal virtue to each other, spreading slander about works created by other Christians.
Churches expect art for free from volunteers who buy their own materials, who are self-taught or who pay for their arts education out of pocket. Everyone says they wish they could draw, but they expect us to pluck art from the air to give away.
Yet also, "Christian art is awful."
Now there are few Christians in the entertainment industry. We're mostly small indies without reach, budget, or training. It's a hobby, a side gig, a hustle to find work at the edges of our lives.
But look at what gets made in our absence.
It's surreal to wake up just this year and find everyone complaining that we've lost the culture war - so shocked that there's hardly anyone in entertainment with principles, so appalled at the perverted garbage created - and that it is we who face censure for not celebrating it.
Christians have themselves to thank.
You heard Christians were too virtuous to apply themselves to such fanciful things as creating Beauty, such frivolous things as making entertainment, such insignificant things as stories for children.
And you bought it.
Hook, line, & sinker.
Churches, support your artists. Pay them for those murals, Sunday school projects, holiday decorations. Defend them. Sponsor the best as missionaries in arts.
Parents, help your kids discern good teachers. Don't let them blow thousands on an arts college if you can find mentors.
Artists, stand up for yourselves. You are not meant to bury your talents. Keep creating. Be a mentor. Also, get over yourselves. Stop angsting and make more stories. #Reanimate
Everybody else, support indie creators. If you enjoy their work, talk it up. Leave reviews.
One last thing:
We all know that you reap what you sow.
But if you sow nothing, or if you rip your own seedlings out of the ground, you don't get "nothing."
You get weeds.
And you have yourself to thank for the condition of your fields.
