Before I start, there is not only ONE type of fake relationships. I will talk about a relationship to gain publicity and a long term pr relationship
Promoting (branding)relationship - a beneficial relationship giving a very good promo or holds in the public eye ( mutual or one - sided).
This kind of relationship usually doesn't last long (4 months - 1 year / sometimes more) The rumors are usually started by some gossip magazine. It all starts before the release of smth newsworthy. Sometimes it's just for popularity or to take the attention from a certain story
There are many paparazzi photos. Gossip magazines make sure everyone knows how "loved up" they were on their dates, they post pictures together, attend public events together. Pictures are sometimes even "leaked". They are papped in unusual places, having "private" time.
Their break up is announced by the same gossip magazine, and they usually "remain friends after". After that the stunt is forgotten, erased from the storyline (it's not needed anymore, or doesn't fit a certain narrative)
Possible examples:
C*mila C*bello and S*awn M*ndes for years were denying their relationship, stating they're only friends. However before the release of Señorita they were very in love with each other. They apparently broke up recently. Their relationship lasted 1 year.

T*ylor S*ift and H*rry S*yles
Their relationship lasted 4 months, they were Hollywood's sweethearts. The pr stunt was so successful it is still brought up from the media. They were seen together holding hands, ,kissing but never confirmed the relationship. ;)

T*ylor S*ift and T*m H*ddleston
They started dating right before Tom's role as James Bond and the Kardashian- S*ift conflict. For two weeks they were seen together everywhere, going on holidays and making out, Tom even wore " I ♡ TS" shirt.. which too obvious.

H*rry S*yles and K*ndall J*nner
This relationship had the purpose to make both stay in the public eye. It was very convenient because they "already dated" they were papped on a yacht, pictures were "leaked" and then again never confirmed the relationship, they're still friends.

Bearding pr relarionship - a long term relationship used to cover a sexuality. Usually lasts 3 years ( most contracts) The storyline is well thought, they are "private". However in a subtle not so subtle way the relationship is pushed in the public eye so it's not forgotten.
In interviews it's often brought up, pictures are posted on anniversaries or holidays, they do pap walks once in a while, gossip magazines write about how in love they are, but still make it seem "private", because celebrities are usually private.
If a celebrity chooses to say the relationship is fake they usually come out as part of the lgbtq+ community. To cover up they use "DENYING RUMORS" which is as effective as the pr stunt.
Other thing which I think is important is something called "glass closet". This is when a celebrity doesn't particularly talk about their sexuality or doesn't hide it. Nowadays this is a very often thing in the entertainment industry.
ADVICE: Don't be ignorant and make your research before saying closetting is illegal. You're invalidating every person/celebrity that was forced to hide, every celebrity that was brave enough to come out and tell their story about how hiding was killing them. Closetting is real+
ufortunately and some people saying "no one does that anymore" makes them very ignorant. Because homophobia still exists. Gen z may be more accepting but there are homophobic parents which know their children look up to some of these celebrities. Telling your truth is not so easy
+ as you think. You all should learn to let go this heteronormative and be more open-minded. It's not nice to label people ( straight is a lebel too). Not everything is what it seems it is. So let people support a possible same-sex relationship as how you support your hetero one.
As long as we all are respectful, it's okay
