When Russia first invaded Crimea, virtually all western journos reporting on the “Ukraine crisis” said that there was a “pro-Russian Ukrainian separatist” “civil uprising”.

Only after Putin publicly acknowledged RU had taken Crimea did they stop using “pro-RU rebels” for Crimea.
But they continued to pretend that “pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists” were responsible for the war in Ukraine’s Donbas region.

Ukrainian voices begging the world to see Russia invaded Ukraine were shunned as “biased”.

Various “experts” reporting from MOSCOW were consulted, and people who had never heard of Ukraine before had a privilged voice about what was happening in the country.

And they got it WRONG. Some out of ignorance, other deliberately lied.

I joined twitter in 2013 because the coverage of the Maidan protests was SO heavily biased and presented from the Kremlin’s dishonest perspective. I wanted access to more info, hoping to find more resources and some HONESTY.

What I discovered was a hell of a lot more lies and bias unfavourable to Ukraine. Treatment of Russia’s war hasn’t been much better. And the NATIVE Ukrainian voices had SO little space, and were largely not treated fairly or with respect.

Remember all of this when you read ANYTHING anyone reports about Belarus now. We should not be seeking out the voices of anyone except for Belarusians fighting against Lukashenko’s dictatorial regime. They are the only ones who matter.

And even if western voices offer a take sympathetic to the protestors, and reveal their three days of terror in Minsk, WHO CARES. Talk to the natives. Talk to the people on the ground. Get their perspective. Share their experience. Listen to THEM.

It is THEIR country. THEIR experience. What THEY want & think is what matters. And they know it better than any drop-in journo or expert who is looking to advance a career on the backs of tortured protestors who didn’t exist for them just a few weeks ago.

And remember that most of these outside “experts” and journos can be easily duped or corrupted - just like the people who told you “pro-Russian Ukrainians” “revolted” in Crimea and Donbas, acknowledging RU’s invasion just in Crimea only after Putin did.
