FYI: abandoning Christianity does not make you invulnerable to cults (nor does it make you smart). It's the desire to be a snowflake that makes you vulnerable to cults. It's wanting to see what no one else sees that makes you a good target. Part of it anyway.

You'll notice that cults THRIVE on exclusive mentality. The idea that the masses have it wrong and it's you, God's snowflakes that know the only way of life.
Also, cults aren't necessarily religious. So dead that "I escaped church" badge. Questioning religion is a rite of passage

Without the spice and the shade, the point I'm trying to make is...most of us are vulnerable to cults. Most of us are taken by personalities in one way or another. We do it in small and big way. We deceive ourselves about the people we admire for different and similar reasons.

We buy into ways of thinking and belief systems, to varying degrees, because life is a mess. A chaotic smorgasbord of just...belief.

There's a spectrum to life, and how you move from one end of the spectrum to another is somewhat determined by circumstance.

Not believing in anything doesn't make you any better or smarter. That just makes *that* your anchor. That's your existential safety net.

As long as we're all in this thing called life, and for as long as existence is Nhlanhla Nene's chair, we're all vulnerable to cults.

Whether or not what we believe in is called a cult is a dice roll of relativity and power.

I'm not passing value judgements on what we understand to be cults. I'm saying that, in life, we're all looking for something that makes sense.
