There's no excuse for mistakes like that. Every single year when we're knocked out of Europe it's "we'll learn from this and do better next year" but the fact is these players don't learn from their mistakes. It's always the same mistakes that cost us games in Europe
You can go back to 2016 and see defensive mistakes that cost us the chance to get out of the Europa League Groups. It's been the exact same problems in 2017, 2018, 2019 and now 2020
Can always say they were unlucky with some goalscoring chances and yes that might be true at times, but at some point it has to come down to a lack of quality at that level. How many teams that make the playoffs on a regular basis miss the amount of chances we miss? None
It doesn't help that the team hasn't really been improved since 2016. There have been some exceptions, with the likes of Jamie McGrath coming in and having a big impact on the team. But when you're transfer strategy becomes signing your best players from 4 years ago,
There's a problem there. There's a reason Pat Hoban, Andy Boyle and Dave McMillan are all back in Ireland. It's because they couldn't cut it at the clubs they left Dundalk for. The only success from that group has been Daryl Horgan, who was by far the best player in that team
It must get to a point where we have to stop saying we're just "unlucky", when realistically it's just that the team isn't at the level we think it is.
There has to be a certain level of blame aimed at Perth after the game tonight too. I haven't ever really criticised him since taking over but tonight was a disaster. The last 20 minutes were essentially just pump it into the box and see what happens. That's just not good enough
We shouldn't have been in that position in the first place and that goes back to the quality in the team but the way we played over the course of the game and how we played the last 20 minutes in particular just isn't good enough
And considering the goal of Peak6 was to get Dundalk to the latter stages of the qualifiers on a consistent basis, they've spent fuck all on players. You can't make the Champions League Groups on a team of free transfers, not in this day and age
There's problems all over the place at the minute. Vinny looks like he's struggling with how to get the best from the players, half the players look like they couldn't give a shite and some just aren't good enough for this team
I did feel sorry for Vinny to a certain degree tonight though. He's obviously under pressure and was desperate for a result tonight but with the attitude of some of the lads tonight how's he ever gonna get a good result in Europe. Absolutely dreading Europa now
