Thread: Reading Teachers vs Kids Reading.

Over the holidays, I've been picking up books for my class library. I've purposely picked books I would normally avoid.

This haul was £1.80, but often I'd ignore some of the titles. Why?
Its a valid question. I tweet #thisteacherreads often enough, I read plenty of kids books because I want to know what's on offer for my class. But, and I may not be alone here, am I a book snob?

Celeb authors are the bane of many Reading Teachers. I avoid them if I'm honest.
Yet when I asked my class what they were reading each day, certain names or books were mentioned daily.

David Walliams ✅
Harry Potter ✅
Cute animal as main character ✅

And here is me sharing some great reads by David Almond or Neil Gaiman. Why don't they pick them up?
This is why. A Reading Teacher prides themselves on knowing books, knowing the next steps, knowing what might catch the imagination in a child likes x, y or z.

However, Kids Reading should read whatever they want. They should ignore the adult in favour of just enjoying a book.
Ripley's, Guinness Book of Records and other non fiction texts should be devoured. Comics are a must. TV tie ins, get them displayed.

Reading for pleasure should be about opting to enjoy it. When Love Island is on a host of teachers are glued to it, no one should say watch
this documentary about something hi brow.

Let kids be kids, let them be Kids Reading. Fill your shelves with a mix of popular, brand titles that fill supermarkets AND *better* books.
