"Maybe we just have different ways of looking of at this. I’ve not heard of a single player who was picked because he was carrying drinks for overseas pros. "
Someone said this to me on these streets & it has not sat right with me all day. If this reaches 1 youngster then great
My exp is from a season were my frustration of being 12th man again and again got to me. Boothy & Dav explained that I was on a learning journey. I only understood it years later. Opportunity isnt always in being in the 1st X1.
If you pay attention you can learn from the sideline
My mate Brian and I were lucky enough to be picked up. We literally carried drinks most of the time. But when the time was right we played. He was a better cricketer and no suprise he went onto play Test cricket. I am truly happy for him. Seeing him make it was a W for me too as
we played together since U/14. But I want to mention some of the pros (overseas only as there was so much learnt from locals too) who helped. Off the top of my head, first few years we had Bilal Shafayat, Paul Horton, Adam Wheater, Chris Gayle, Moen Ali, Jonesey of course our
Coach at the time, Dave Houghton. These were people who if you allowed them, they shared so much with us. Some even gave some of their earnings to the local guys. Be it on a fishing outing, in the nets, in the change room, post match or on the field their insights always left a
lasting impression. The hunger for success and drive you could feel when they spoke.
So this could be in sport, work or life in general. Take time to learn from those who have gone before you. Be teachable and ask questions. Be OK with failure and draw lessons from it. When you
succeed, dont get complacent. That's one bit of the story, but I'm sure theres more of these.
To answer the title message, I'm OK not seeing things the same as most, it's the story of my life.
