There was a party last night in the dorms at nearby university.

There were no masks and social distancing was not observed.

The students were evicted from campus!

They agreed to this when they chose to live on campus!!

So why would they do it??

Our brains are hardwired to discount things that stay the same over time.

For those of you wearing socks today, you have not thought about how they feel since you put them on this morning!

If your shoe “ate”your sock you would notice that! And you noticed them when I..
...mentioned them. So the sensory neurons did not stop reporting on how your socks fit around your ankle.

But our brains cannot possibly focus on every sensation reported to the brain.

So it is wired to pay most attention to changes.

The #COVID19 crisis began months ago!
As time passes it is easy to discount the threat of becoming infected!

Combine that with college age students (whose judgement center is not fully on board typically until 25 yo) and it is easy to see how this happens.

Another factor working against containment is the...
...misinformation that is flooding social media and the web!

Misinformation is spread to frustrate you to the point that you don’t care!

Also families dealing with life threatening illnesses tend to be less focused on protesting to protect civil rights https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/coronavirus/articles/coronavirus-myths-rumors-misinformation.html
So how do we help childen and young adults practice social distancing and uaing a mask?

1) Wear masks at home so that it becomes a habit!

2)Create a reward system!

Behavioral change is easier if you can make it fun and personalize it to the things that motivate the person!
A friend sews masks and gives them away!

So I now carry extra masks of varying sizes when I am out! I offer them to anyone I encounter who is not wearing a mask.

Everyone’s is grateful and use their new mask!
