1/6 Convo with a mentee recently abt a Step 1 score which they felt was too low for the competitive field they want to enter. They started the conversation talking about giving up on the dream. Fearful for their future. I want to share highlights from our conversation.
2/6 We are more than our Step scores. I know everyone says it. I know that MedEd often reinforces the opposite. And I know that residency/GME isn’t had “holistic” as we’d like. But hear me
You are more than your step score!

3/6 No applicant is defined by JUST step. There r many other aspects that are impt in the selection process. Leadership, growth mind set, service, accountability, dependability, mindfulness to name a few that r impt 2 me. Granted, some pgms do this better than others
4/6Notice *smart* isn’t there. Many ppl are smart-not everyone should be a phys. Our job is to help you understand & clarify the elements germaine to ur speciality. Our job is to help you leverage ur strengths.
Granted, some do this better than others - ex: I’m still growing

5/6 Be the architect of your own destiny. Lead from within, don’t let MedEd’s reliance on externalized benchmarks be your only guide (h/t @KemiDoll ) it’s a reframing tht can occur at any stage. And it’s one that can change your life.
hello me!

6/6 step is over (whew!) and cannot be changed. If we let fear guide us then we are leaving a lot on the table. Discard fear, reconnect with your strengths and move forward with that which fulfills you. Turn it into gold!
