A few practice observations from Day 3: BB quote allowing for a QB platoon provided a different context for the rotation of reps among the three QBs – Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham, and Brian Hoyer -- at practice. There appears to be more of a purpose to the alternating of snaps...
Expect the Patriots to have some nifty designed runs for Cam Newton this year. He ripped one off in practice that was well-designed with misdirection. That’s about as much as we’re allowed to report by the Patriots...
Either Newton was a bit off or his timing with certain pass-catchers is. He threw behind rookie wideout Isaiah Zuber and had a pass intercepted by rookie linebacker Caash Maluia early. He was intercepted by rookie safety Kyle Dugger and also threw behind rookie TE Dalton Keene...
The pass-catchers didn’t help sometimes. Devin Asiasi had a drop on Cam, so did Julian Edelman.. Keene later dropped a pass from Hoyer. Newton did hit a nice deep out to former Carolina teammate Damiere Byrd late in practice, but couldn’t connect with Edelman on 3rd and goal...
It was another uneven day for the other main QB contender, Jarrett Stidham. He had a poor throw on a deep post to Byrd that was easily intercepted by J.C. Jackson, and overthrow an open receiver deep. He had another off-target throw on a flag route...
But Stidham hit a beautiful on-time shallow cross to Gunner Olszewski. He hit rookie running back J.J. Taylor on a fade route for a touchdown late in goal line, and was part of the Play of the Day, connecting with Byrd for a long touchdown toss behind Jason McCourty...
Good day for Gunner Olszewski: With 2019 first-rounder N’Keal Harry out, Gunner shined. He beat Stephon Gilmore deep, but Hoyer overthrew it and his diving attempt failed. He caught a deep comeback on Gilmore from Newton that featured a good blitz pick-up by the offensive line...
It’s clear that Brian Hoyer has the best command of the offense. He knows where to go with the ball, and is accurate within his arm strength range. He’s the most ready QB for Day 1 of the season right now, but the other two quarterbacks have a lot more upside...
Rookie safety Kyle Dugger might be from a small school, Lenoir-Rhyne, but he has big-time ball skills. He did a good job defending TEs and came up with interceptions on back-to-back plays, although the second one was disputed by the media with a split vote on whether he got it...
It was nice to see Julian Edelman back as a full participant in practice. The Patriots WR corps is in big trouble without him. No Pats WR besides JE11 reached 30 catches or 400 yards last season. The guy that came the closest, Phillip Dorsett (29 catches for 397 yards) is gone...
I’m no @GregABedard, but I like the potential versatility of rookie offensive lineman Justin Herron. There is some good competition for the backup offensive line spots. Fin.
