BRAND NEW (never before seen data on #AsianWomen) by me and @kimcheesquat (another Asian female economist): https://economistmom.com/2020/08/19/seeing-asian-women-to-better-understand-the-pandemic-she-cession/ #shecession
The data are there -- just no one cared enough to look. Asian females have suffered the largest absolute (let alone percentage) increase in unemployment during this pandemic recession.
Counter-intuitive perhaps, until you realize that although Asian women can do pretty well in the labor market, we have (unpaid) demands at home that can easily outweigh (paid) demands at work.
Who would have thought that looking more closely at *Asian* working moms could help us better understand what *all* working moms are facing in this #PandemicRecession.
Also gets one to think about how much this can hold back economic activity even in old economists' terms (GDP). It's not just about the extra uncompensated burdens on women, it's that many market-valuable women are forced to withdraw from the GDP-measured economy.
Thanks to many whose research and writing and even tweets got Mina @kimcheesquat and I to dig into this ( @mikemadowitz @LipstickEcon @m_heggeness @janeor_econ @cnicolemason, and more...) And profound appreciation for @BLS_gov for the public data.
