Last week, @tribpub said we would be leaving our building on Orange Ave forever. Until now, our members have absorbed expenses associated with working from home. They’ve swallowed higher electricity bills, made do by working at kitchen tables & sofas, thinking we’d be back soon.
Now we know we’re never going back to the old newsroom & we don't have firm plans to establish a new office. We’re getting ready to bargain with @tribpub over our new working conditions. Our company is saving money by having us work from home & passing along the bill to workers.
A year ago, the @orlandosentinel purchased new chairs for employees. Several employees obtained permission from their managers to bring them home for crucial back support while working long hours. Others want to take them home now as they prepare to work remotely indefinitely.
But @tribpub has now forbidden employees to remove them. This is petty. Asking us to bargain over the chairs is ridiculous because the company has nothing to gain by requiring the chairs to sit unused in an empty newsroom or in storage.
Do the right thing, @tribpub. You’re saving money by closing newsrooms and forcing employees to work remotely longer than the pandemic requires. Help employees make their new work environments as comfortable and productive as possible.
As a reminder @tribpub, you have $80.5 million in cash. So again, we ask — is this really about chairs?
