Kakatiyas, a Telugu dynasty that ruled from the capital city of Orugallu(Warangal) and the vassal kingdoms under it were instrumental in developing Telugu

Literature at a fast pace from 12th to 14th centuries.

Large number of work was written in Telugu and were also translated from Sanskrit. Kakatiyas era was seen as a glorious age of Telugu literature for their role in patronising Telugu poets.

Among great Telugu poets & their influential work during this Kakatiya era are;

1) Tikkana: One of the Kavitrayam(Trinity of Poets). He translated 15 Parvas of Sanskrit Vyasa MahaBharata into Telugu which became part of Telugu "Andhra Mahabharatam."

2) Ketana: He wrote the first grammar book written on Telugu language in Telugu "Andhra Bhasha Bhushanamu",

the first law book(Dharma Shastra) in Telugu language (a translation of Sanskrit "Mitakshara") "Vijnanesvaramu"

& "Dasakumara Charitra," "Kadambari" (translations

3) Marana: He wrote the first Puranam in Telugu- "Markandeya Puranam"(translated from Sanskrit).

4) Yathavakkula Annamayya wrote one of the earliest Satakams in Telugu, "Sarvesvara Satakam."

5) Palkuriki Somanatha wrote "Vrushadhipa Satakam,"

3 Telugu Ramayanas that were popularly written during Kakatiyas era:

Tikkana wrote "Nirvachanottara Ramayanamu" and he dedicated it to Kakatiya emperor Ganapatideva.

King-Poet Gona Budda Reddy wrote "Ranganatha Ramayanamu."

Hulakki Bhaskara wrote "Bhaskara Ramayanamu."

Thus, Kakatiyas can be seen as a prelude to development of Telugu literature in Vijayanagara empire. The latter kingdom brought golden era into Telugu literature especially during the reign of Sri Krishnadevaraya.

Vijayanagara empire also rose as a new kingdom from the banks of Tungabhadra when the mighty Kakatiyas collapsed in Deccan region.
