I used to work for a sexual assault crisis agency. Every year, I blind-emailed officials to get endorsements for #DenimDay. Kamala’s then-AG office was always the highest name on our list. When she ran for Senate, I yelled “Oh shit, that’s my girl!” Stoked af for my girl tonight.
I wish I could give this more nuance without a thread- but at the time I worked there, #DenimDay was national, but not well known. We didn’t have Guess jeans, we didn’t have celebrities. The blind emails were so tedious and boring and I would get very few responses.
Kamala’s AG office would respond within a couple days. I had no idea who she was at the time (was not good about local/state politics)- but this made me google her. First thought: “Oh, she’s hot?” (Sorry, sorry) Second thought, after reading more “Oh, she’s awesome.”
Anyway, it seems very small, I guess? But I never forgot it. And for years I’ve seen her place survivors at the forefront of policy making- and it has always spoken, to me, of just how important the issue is for her. She always had survivors’ backs- and I’ll always have hers.
Related: I started working in the field (and became a sexual assault crisis counselor) because of the advocacy of @Mariska. So the DNC adding her to the list of speakers is giving me all the feels and brings it full-circle for me.
