Thread: This appeared in my memories today so I figured I'd share it. It happened years ago, but the message is perfect for #WorldHumanitarianDay. Please read and share this to inspire others. This is a story about Seth.
Earlier today when I was at work, I noticed a new face. A young guy named Seth was being quickly trained by the assistant manager during a busy morning rush. As I worked, I noticed he wasn't taking everything in as quick as the assistant manager was explaining it.
In my mind I just figured it was that first day on the job fear. I watched Seth throughout the morning and there was a point when a supervisor came to me and asked, "did they tell you about the new guy." I replied, "no."
He started to explain, but before words came out we started to get busy again, and he said, "I'll tell you later." Later never came, and the day moved on. Seth didn't say much, but he kept trying to keep up, and even offered help to others. I watched his mannerisms. His pace.
His eyes. His focus. Then it dawned on me. Nobody was extending any other help or training to this young man, as a matter of fact some of the younger guys would just ignore him.. I even overhead some laughing at him. When things slowed down, the supervisor finally approached me..
and explained, but I already figured it out. After that confirmation, I pulled Seth aside, shook his hand and introduced myself. I told him to stick with me for the remainder of the day, and trained him properly with patience. He opened up and caught on quick.
I said to this 18-year-old, "my goal is to train you until you're better than me." He smiled and by the end of the day, he was moving faster and completing each task thoroughly. Seth has autism. Several morals are within this story.
We as people need to make more effort to assist those with mental conditions. I witnessed today just how uncompassionate people can be. I'm not one of those people.. Don't be one of those people.
My last words to him: See you tomorrow Seth. You did great today.
My last words to him: See you tomorrow Seth. You did great today.
Last thing I want to say, not that it matters.. but to encourage more unity. Seth was White. Help isn't designed to come in a particular color, gender, race, religion etc. We are all one tribe. #WorldHumanitarianDay
