So excited that @DrBiden will be our next First Lady. She will bring her wisdom, passion, empathy and love to the WH and the country. A quick personal story – had opportunity to introduce oldest kids (then 7 and 4) to the Biden’s back in 2009 – our 4 year old daughter Nava 1/8
was super excited to meet Dr Biden (she thought @JoeBiden was cool but not as cool as @DrBiden) because she found out that Dr Biden is a teacher. During our chat, Nava told Dr Biden that she was thinking about perhaps becoming a teacher one day – 2/8
Dr Biden then proceeded to spend the next 5 minutes speaking with Nava at her level about why she loves being a teacher; why it is so important , the joy it brings to so many people and how educating our children is the key to our future. 3/8
The Biden’s moved on but kids were super impressed (Dad even more so) and we left thinking we would have a great memory of the kids meeting the VP and Second Lady. Much to our surprise, about 3 weeks later, a letter arrived at our house addressed to Nava from the Second Lady. 4/8
In the handwritten letter, Dr Biden, thanked Nava for sharing her thoughts with her and encouraged her to follow her dreams in teaching or anything else she desired; to work hard; but remember to have fun too 5/8
Fast forward 7 years and @DrBiden was visiting Costa Rica, where I had the honor of serving as US Ambassador, to help launch a program to encourage the inclusion of more girls and young women in STEAM education and to talk about gender equality – 6/8
It was Father’s Day and the entire family decided to join me at the airport to greet her. After greeting the assembled “dignitaries” she walked right over to our daughter Nava and asked her if she still thought about being a teacher – Nava was speechless – I think we all were 7/8
These stories are common with the Biden’s (I have an amazing one w the VP) it's who they are at their core. They see you; they connect; they care. As our next First Lady said last night – “Joe Biden will bring us together and make us whole again.” He and @DrBiden will! 8/8
