I team up with Piketty @PikettyLeMonde & Gethin @amorygethin, gather data on every direct election in Pakistan to answer these questions. Thread. 1/n https://twitter.com/WIL_inequality/status/1296075642354663424

First, who do the most educated in Pakistan vote for? Analyzing data from every direct election, including 1970 election, we find the most educated vote for Islamic parties esp. the Jamat-e-Islami! The pattern only reversed in 2018, where almost all JI voters voted for PTI. (2/n)
This begs the question why PTI rose to power? We attribute the rise of PTI due to a “perfect storm”: the simultaneous coming together of religious, economic and military elite aided by a religious-nationalist political agenda. (3/n)
Last, we ask what explains the fall in political power of the Left in Pakistan? We explain it as a major shock in form of the military coup of Gen. Zia and his Islamization reforms that permanently fractured the support for Left in Punjab. (4/n)
