Whether I'm teaching an online college course or my HS classes, prep for virtual learning takes sooooo much longer. Currently, I have three preps that I need to prepare for every day. Here are some of my concessions: https://twitter.com/mel_katzz/status/1295792212530397185
1. There is an overwhelming number of apps out there that promise to make virtual learning amazing! But they take time for you and your students to learn. Do not bombard yourself or students with new tech. Start small with things you are comfortable with. You can add later.
2. My classroom looks more "traditional" virtually than in-person. I have come to terms with that. I do a mini-lecture then turn students loose to work on assignments. I know it's not full NGSS inquiry, but it keeps my prep down to a reasonable amount of time and energy.
2. You can still make your work student-centered and engaging. I've been having kids do a lot of research and reporting. Utilize articles, videos, etc that they can access asynchronously.
3. Basically... Give yourself and students grace. This is a poorly managed pandemic. None of us are firing on all cylinders. Try to build relationships first and if your students learn some content along the way, great!
