My latest: AOC’s brief, poetic moment to shine — and plant a big flag https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/08/19/aocs-brief-poetic-moment-shine-plant-big-flag/
I was struck by @AOC's and her connection to poetry, and it reminded me of what Audre Lord said about women of color and poetry, and how so often Black women and women of color have to make do with less time, and less space to speak and operate.
@AOC's exchange with her second grade teacher, @mjacobs324 about how memorizing poetry prepared her for her one minute speech reminded me of how my second grade teacher read poetry out loud to us every day in English class. We learned about Haikus, sonnets, syllables.. structures
Audre Lorde wrote that "poetry is not a luxury".
Little did our teachers know that teaching us black children and children of color poetry was teaching us how to deliver power, subtlety, creativity and truth --when too often we not given time and space to express ourselves.
