So, I’d like to share an insight, that came a few hours before the DNC began on Monday.

2/ “Never get too far ahead of the audience.” That’s the rule. And it usually goes with the character note, “Who’s our (the audience’s) way in?”

3/...you’re coming into people’s most intimate space: their home. When a writer does her/his job well, following those rules, the audience has a deep connection w/ the story, world, & esp characters. And they can take an emotional journey with them because of it.

4/ Live event television is very different. With that experience, the goal is to transport the audience out of their home and to your event. Make them feel like they’re there. The audience is watching something happen away from their life - and will go on with or without them.
5/ In short: All the tv shows you love are crafted to point the story towards you - to enter your home & life.
For luve events, the audience is directed outward, towards the event.
When it really sunk in that this live event, the DNC, was coming to us FROM people’s homes...

... and that the focus was on reaching us, the audience, in OUR homes... well, then the possibility for it to be deeply emotional was on the table - IF produced well.
