Four female pilots leaving their ship, Pistol Packin' Mama, at the four-engine school at Lockbourne AAF. World War II, 1944.
WASP pilots flew over 60 million miles, transported every type of military aircraft, towed targets for live anti-aircraft gun practice, simulated strafing missions and transported cargo. Thirty-eight WASP members lost their lives and one disappeared while on a ferry mission.
Cornelia Fort was the first WASP to die while on active duty in the US military. Before the WASP program started, Fort witnessed from the air the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

She died on March 21, 1943 in an aircraft collision at only 24 years old.
