I've seen 4 moderately successful social media people say they're "taking an extended break" recently on the grounds that having a big audience is unhealthy. It's really odd that the social media sites still offer zero support to young creators who suddenly amass a following
Before social media, having a following meant you almost certainly had a huge team behind you. Movie/TV stars had PR teams, studios with hundreds of staff, media training, mentors etc. Now there's people who have millions of fans with zero infrastructure to help or guide them
Back in the days movie studios used to send thugs out to threaten journalists who dug up dirt on their stars. These days Google and Facebook throw a tantrum every time it's even suggested they should be more accountable or transparent to the people that make them billions.
Anyway, point is, every traditional media outlet in this country who says they can't find fresh and diverse talent is lying. There's people out there with millions of fans walking away from the industry daily who would be more than happy to sign with them in exchange for support.
If Channel 10 wants to bring back advertisers, all they need to do is sign 100 popular Aussie social media creators and use their ad team to set up brand deals for their channels. Creators get support infrastructure. Ten widens their audience by millions per week. Everyone wins.
