“the they/thems” “the enbys” “enbyians” ok listen. listen. i know that the thought of just saying “non binary people” burns you from the inside out but either do it, or perish by my hand. ur choice
and you know what REALLY bothers me about “they/thems” being used as a substitute for the term “non binary psople”? not every non-binary person even uses they/them pronouns, so it’s both inaccurate and bordering on misgendering and i hate it. HATE it
p.s. — it’s totally fine if you’re non-binary and you want to call yourself an enby; if you’re nb, use they/them pronouns and call yourself a they/them, etc — but assuming that every other non-binary person is okay with it, too? that’s the shitty part. fuck that part
for the people: asking why some nb people don’t like the term enby — it’s generally because it can feel othering; its use as a noun especially makes it similar to labels for animals, and inanimate objects, in a way that can be deeply uncomfy for nb people
terms like “they/thems”, “theydies + gentlethems” are meant to refer to non binary people but assumes the pronouns nb use and imply that they/them pronouns + nb ppl are generally gender neutral/genderless. they‘re generally uncomfy for nb people who don’t use they/them pronouns
*the terms nb people use, i ran outta characters SKAKDKS
(muting this for a bit so i can see other notifs but i’ll check back in still! au revoir, stay gay
)

ANOTHER p.s — ik that there was a lot of discussion at one point around not using NB bc it also means non-Black;; imo it’s usually pretty easy from Contacts to figure out if a person is non black or nonbinary and i know that some people use nby instead of nb to get around it +
but! there’re obvious limitations around initialised language after a certain point, and I think with this particular initialism it’s pretty easy (generally, for people who’re fluent in English** to work out) using context which one is being spoken on +
some Black people specifically did/do feel that nb should be used to mean “non-black” exclusively, which i get, but i personally don’t care that much in that respec. it’s never really gotten in the way of me communicating + both meanings sprung up around the same time for me, so
in conclusion: https://twitter.com/jinkidilf/status/1296187539523600384
this was the tweet i quoted before;; rip to one of the best tweets anyone’s ever written in living history
“but isn’t enby just supposed to mean non binary?” https://twitter.com/bitterbleue/status/1296441107014918147
“can i say [alternative to just saying non-binary people/nb people that grammatically implies nb people are an inanimate object]?” https://twitter.com/bitterbleue/status/1296439267703619584
in conclusion part 2: just don’t assume that every nb person wants to be called a gentlethem/theydie/enby, or any of the euphemistic words you’re using that can feel dehumanising and infantilising to )(other) nb people (+ come off as a way of avoiding saying non binary)!!?
for the people who‘ve been educated by this thread (and actually read, engaged with and thought about what i said): don’t be shy, tip a non-binary baddie 4 their educational labour 2day
