1/ Since taking on the role of Green group spokesperson for Health and Adult Social Care last year, I've learned a great deal about Public Health.

Public health work covers a great many really important projects and services.
2/ It includes things like activity promotion, drug and alcohol services, mental health support, vaccination programmes - as well as infection prevention.

3/ Public health spending is four times as effective as healthcare spending for improving the health of the population.
4/ There's a real worry that a crisis driven reorganisation that focuses on pandemic response will lead to this other important work getting swept under the carpet. Some people have suggested that perhaps that's deliberate...
5/ Public health has a huge role to play in reducing health inequalities, which result in a difference in life expectancy of over a decade between affluent areas and more deprived areas.

With COVID, this focus has become more, not less, important.
6/ We must ensure that all the difficult and important work that Public Health departments and organisations were doing prior to the pandemic does not get forgotten in the reshuffle.
