Some of you might be interested in what an exec editor's job involves. So here's the history of the paper I'm working on right now. It was submitted in Nov '19 & I desk-rejected it with comments, including the need for an English language check (1/5) https://twitter.com/kmgoodenough/status/1295780543058137089
It came back in Dec '19 and I sent it out for review. I only had to ask 6 reviewers to get 2, so not a bad ratio. It went back to the authors in Mar '20 with extensive comments from reviewers & myself. A revised version came back a few weeks later. (2/5)
In May '20 I went through the revisions & sent it back to authors highlighting substantial points they hadn't yet addressed. It came back to me again in July & I've just got to it today. Most points now addressed, but new text has introduced some inconsistencies. (3/5)
I'm working through it now & a final author's revision will be needed. Total time spent by me on this paper? At least 5 hours.... and that's just one of nearly 100 papers handled in the last year. All on top of my full-time day job. (4/5)
I know it's tough writing in English when it's not your first language, & there's a lot of pressure to publish in many countries. Most editors are trying to do our best to help authors. I do apologise that we can't answer as quickly or personally as we'd like! (5/5)
