I opted to leave a Russell Group Uni, and turned down some great job offers from other RGs, because I WANT to work @BangorUni.
I offer my students here the same expertise, and teach with the same passion as I did in my RG job.

I am a Conservation Biologist. I mostly research tropical systems, but being able to see Snowdonia from my window, & watch dolphins leap in the Menai Straight feeds my soul & makes my heart sing. Going to work in city tower just did not. Nature nurtures my scientific thinking.
Bangor is a very small city so it is impossible not to meet and re-meet people, so its a friendly, safe place.
Also, I think Bangor is the best connected rural uni in the UK. We have direct train connections from Bangor to London & Manchester Airport, & train>ferry to Dublin.

We have an exceptional accumulation of staff with expertise in Zoology ( @BangorPrimates, @Bangor_Nav @BangorBirds, @BangorHerps) Conservation, Forestry and Environmental Science - a wonderful composition for my research and teaching interests.
Bangor students are diverse and inspiring. The societies they run energise the school, & greatly enhance the student experience, nurturing lifelong connections between students, staff & the wider community.

I became pregnant after I was offered the job here, and would not have qualified for full maternity benefits as I wouldnt have worked the statutory qualifying period before my baby was due. I wrote a letter to the VC and the Uni changed the maternity policy.
@BangorUni is now one of only a handful of unis with no "qualifying period" :-) It is VERY important that Unis listen to and support staff. If equality/diversity issues are addressed among staff then staff are better placed to teach & support students. I was listened to :-)
I could go on, but my overall point is that the current rhetoric arround the importance of "Russell Group" and "Elite" or "High ranking" institutions is very damaging if it diverts students from looking at the full range of unis and courses on offer.
I feel very sorry that applicants have had such a terrible time over their grades. But, honestly, when I teach you I dont even know what grades you arrive with. I respect and aspire to teach every student well.
