Breaking down the structures of other people’s stories.
Story structure theory is interesting but with a few exceptions I don’t find it particularly useful at the front end of inventing something.
I tend to feel a story at the page (apologies to all beta readers editors), and doing something like this gives me a sort of emotional landscape to slither over
Usually I do it with fairy tales and other mythic-weight narratives, though.
Keeping it super high-level so I don’t copy anything. It’s just a way of framing narrative shapes that works better for me than most others (although they can be fine diagnostics).
