Women being put at the helm of a ship about to sink is common. Kim Campbell was Canada's first female Prime Minister. But it went to her bc the men around her chose her to suffer the blow that was coming. This is something women are advised to consider when offered top positions.
We can't talk about breaking glass ceilings without addressing a common situation where women are set up to fail & the men around them benefit or fail up, perpetuating misogynist views that women are less capable. I'm always happy to see women climbing sky high, but I'm wary too.
Campbell is trending as a woman who broke the barrier before Freeland, and she probably should have. But in the early 90's an incredibly accomplished woman was made Prime Minister to thicken the glass on the ceiling. Not break it.
Lots of commentary about Freeland here. I don't think this ship is sinking, and of course Freeland is qualified & deserving of leadership role. I'm excited to see what she does next. This doesn't always happen to women but this common phenomenon is at least in the back of my mind
It should be something we are watching and talking about, because it still happens. Also if you're a woman offered leadership this should be a consideration in the decision to take a position.
