A People’s timeline: The last 4 years of “criminal justice reform” in Nashville (thread):
In 2016 a coalition consisting of @gideonsarmyunited @NoExceptionsPr1 @nashnaacp and other Black-led groups released a 200-page document called the Driving While Black (DWB) Report. Read the report here: …https://drivingwhileblacknashville.wordpress.com/summary-booklet/
2 out of the 12 key findings were:

- Between 2011-2015, MNPD conducted 7.7x more traffic stops annually than the U.S. national average.

- Between 2011-2015, MNPD stopped more Black people than there were Black people 16 years old and over living in Davidson County.
In addition to the findings, the community delivered demands aimed at remedying the racial bias in MNPD.

The establishment of a civilian oversight board was among the demands.
2017 - @OversightNow, a grassroots group dedicated to establishing civilian oversight of police, is formed.
August 14, 2020 - @JohnCooper4Nash creates a 40 person board with responsibilities mirroring @MNCONashville. Very similar to Barry’s response to the findings of the Driving While Black Report. https://www.nashville.gov/News-Media/News-Article/ID/10079/Nashville-Mayor-John-Cooper-Announces-Policing-Policy-Commission-to-Make-Nashville-a-Model-of-21st-Century-Policing.aspx
Nashville is locked in a harmful cycle of inaction, distraction, disillusionment.
It will take organizing to radical interrupt Nashville’s cycle of harming our people.
