This article is incredibly irresponsible.

Among just blatantly bad math* the narrative pins it all on BLM protests even though at least one of the killings, by their own measure, was by a white supremacist. Another was of someone who was *retired* PO https://abcnews.go.com/US/police-officers-killed-surge-28-year-point-civil/story?id=71773405
* Why is the bad math? 28% represents an increase of 5 police offices. It's a huge percentage increase because the number of cops killed on the job is low. It's safer being a cop than being a garbage man.

It also compared year over year (a small sample) https://qz.com/410585/garbage-collectors-are-more-likely-to-die-on-the-job-than-police-patrol-officers/
When dealing with small numbers you need a larger sample set to deal with year to year variations. If I learned only one thing in college - it was the standard fucking deviation.

It also doesn't account for things like size of police force.
This scale is stupid (there's no zero so it looks like a VERY dramatic decline and uptick) - it ends in 2018 but FBI data suggests at least as of 2018 there are more cops per population.
You know what else the story doesn't tell you? That in addition to the uptick in police officers deliberately killed, the number of police officers accidentally killed was also up - by roughly the same amount.
It also didn't bother to do the very basic thing of looking to see if there was uptick after the May protests began.

But let's say they accounted for all of these things. It's still irresponsible. The story suggests that protests lead to more PO deaths police deaths. BUT
