ND has embarked upon a hopeful attempt at the pause that chastens. If we succeed, human relationships will be enriched, many jobs will be saved. It won't be easy and it may fail. It's not reckless and I think it's appropriate to try the hard thing for the many for whom "stay

home" would mean unemployment, isolation, and sorrow. It appears that despite our outbreak no staff or faculty have been infected by any students, and the lockdown gives everyone a chance to find a way forward. The Church's mission is a mission of mercy and a story of second

chances. We can give it a bit more time to see if that second chance can be successful, and do so while keeping our campus and the wider community at low risk.
