First of all, I would like to thank our @OzCvA team for their help with this research but importantly thank the 548 Australian cardiovascular researchers who answered our survey in 2019, published now in @HeartLungCirc

@MonashBiol @heartfoundation https://twitter.com/Monash_Science/status/1295874607296073729
So why did we do this study?

We regularly talk about leaving cardiovascular research ("brain drain") but we had no evidence that this was happening

We also wanted to understand if people were leaving, why that was the case
Some of our key findings include:

-only 23% of respondents had permanent positions
-68% had considered leaving the sector
-a worrying 91% said they will leave in the next few years if they can't secure funding
We then compared male vs female researchers (adjusted for age & career stage)

Women were less likely to:
-be a lab head
-feel they had a long-term career path as CVD researcher

And more women were:
-unsure about future employment
-more likely to consider leaving the sector
Let me also add that these results were pre-COVID-19!!!

With the economic crisis, isolation/restrictions, #WFH, etc numbers in terms of job security are likely to get worse, and as we have heard from many, women are facing more difficulties due to primary carer responsibilities
Australia has bright and passionate cardiovascular researchers. Unfortunately, we found that lack of job security is driving many to leave the sector

We hope the CV Champions program can help change that
