The developing coalition to make Trump a one term president and move this country forward from the grip of his incompetent and corrupt hold on the office of the presidency is one I've longed to see for years, and so I'm hopeful. It's been a long road to get here, though...
As one who observed & spoke out very early on of the threat he posed from a national security and rule of law perspective, the willingness of so many who knew better to join up with his campaign and his administration, was beyond frustrating... https://www.lawfareblog.com/if-you-care-about-national-security-dont-vote-trump
It took a long time for me to understand how there were some who actually thought he would grow into the role of president, and that he would surround himself with knowledgeable advisors, when it seemed so obvious from the campaign of 2016 that he was incapable of it...
I was grateful that there were some in the natsec community - incl. many who served in in R administrations - who understood "he would use the authority of his office to act in ways that make America less safe and...diminish our standing in the world" https://warontherocks.com/2016/03/open-letter-on-donald-trump-from-gop-national-security-leaders/
It took time, but soon members of the legal community - including some who had supported him in the campaign - came to see that his lack of respect for the rule of law was not just lack of understanding, but an affirmative attempt to flout and abuse it: https://checks-and-balances.org/about/
Over the past three years, these national security & legal professionals, including some who normally would never have taken on any public role, have signed letters, gone on TV, written opinion pieces, litigated pro bono & done much more behind the scenes to try to turn the tide
And then there was a separate group of political advisors, commentators and other public and political figures who also realized the party they had been affiliated with had been corrupted - perhaps permanently - and needed to be worked against actively...
I feel comfortable saying that nearly all of these individuals have done so at some professional risk and with serious consequences to long established professional and even longstanding personal friendships. No one really wants to talk about the costs, but they're there...
But the costs are nothing compared to the alternative. Go back and read the national security warning letters. And then read & listen to @MilesTaylorUSA. Trump has been everything he was warned about having the potential to become, and worse.
And so it brings hope, not only to see @JohnKasich who called out Trump back in 2016, but @cindymccain and Colin Powell and Susan Molinari and @GovCTW and the work of @gtconway3d and @MilesTaylorUSA and anyone else who realizes that this moment in time demands a unity of effort..
This election is not about policy. It's not about preference. This election is about fundamentals: fairness, freedom & family. A government that treats each individual fairly. A president who nurtures freedom. And an administration that puts your family's health & safety first.
