The longer I work in this industry the more deeply I understand the difference between a story I want to be a reader for and a story I want to be the editor for.
I guess for clarification, books I want to be the editor for inspire a vision—an editorial vision and a market vision. I can clearly identify who the audience for the book is and I know how to reach them.
I get so many amazing submissions that are absolutely books I want to read, but I’m not confident in my ability to break them out in a meaningful way. So it’d be a detriment to the author for me to move forward with the project.
