Talking in schools? You cannot do the exact same talk for year 1 as you can for year 6. Adjust the content and levels of explanation. There’s a fine line between kids learning new stuff and talking above them and losing their interest #scicomm
Don’t use a script. It’s too wooden. You know your stuff, let it be natural. Without a script you’re paying more attention to your audience, you engage with them fully #scicomm
If you’re talking to kids, emphasise the bits you know they’ll find cool. You don’t need to show off to kids, or prove yourself. You just need to tell them cool stuff #scicomm
Young kids have a hard time understanding numbers, particularly big ones. If you tell them something is a million miles away, it really wont mean a lot to them. Find another way. #scicomm
Never ever let a kid think they’ve asked a stupid question. Ever. You’ll take away any passion that they ever had for your subject. I’ve seen this and heard this and how I haven’t wrestled that person to the floor, I don’t know #scicomm
If you’re talking in schools in individual classes, take your cue from the teacher. Each school has different ways of getting a class’ attention (hand signals, claps) Respect the teacher and use the same methods. #scicomm
