I have a story to tell you

It's about my father

A cup of coffee

A glass of iced tea

And the one universal truth of masculinity that my young mind had come up with

All because I paid attention to the biggest difference between my mom and dad's morning routine.

Story Time 👇
From a young age I knew that some things were different about my mother and father

Dad had short hair

Mom had long hair.

Dad wore pants

Mom wore dresses and skirts.

Dad went to work during the day

Mom stayed home and homeschooled us.

These things are true of men & women.
Being homeschooled I spent a lot of time around my parents

And every morning, I'd observe the same rituals:

Dad made a glass of iced tea

Mom made a cup of coffee.

Never once did I see Dad make a cup of joe

Never once did I see Mom take a sip of Dad's sweet tea.

Interesting.
I observed this countless times. Soon I came to a rational conclusion:

"Men don't drink coffee."

I was certain of this, too.

As I began to spend more time out of the house, I started to realize that other men would drink coffee

And I'd think to myself, "They aren't real men"
For years, the mornings would repeat themselves

Dad made tea

Mom made coffee

And Dad never drank coffee. To this day I've still never seen him drink coffee.

As I saw other men drink coffee, I thought to myself

"They aren't as manly as my dad, he never drinks coffee."
Now that I know better

I realize that the amount of coffee (or lack thereof) that a man drinks has nothing to do with how masculine he is.

I drink a cup of coffee every morning

(For the record, I never turn down sweet-tea)

But for years, I thought men shouldn't drink coffee.
It wasn't until I started seeing men much older than my father drink coffee that I figured out my perception of this paradigm was off.

But that just goes to show

Your young sons are watching your every move

They are comparing your behavior with mom's behavior

Because they...
Because your sons instinctively want to be as much like you as possible

Whether it's something as silly as thinking a real man doesn't drink coffee

Or thinking a real man comes home and drinks a beer every night

Your kids are watching you

Your sons want to be the man that you
And as your sons get older

And they learn the masculine must do's from other men

They'll start to piece things together

They'll realize that they learned what it means to be a man because of your example.

And either that example sticks and steers them well

Or it doesn't....
The point is:

Your sons are watching you

The smallest things stick with them for years

It will shape what they believe makes or breaks a man.

Those lessons are important.

You are the greatest man alive in their mind

So show them daily what it means to be a great man.
And in case you were wondering...

I now know why Dad doesn't drink coffee.

He used to drink it

But after years of smelling coffee on his parents' breath when they'd kiss him goodbye for school

He could barely stand the smell

So he stopped

That's why he doesn't drink coffee.
