The erosion of the Scottish political establishment is becoming exhausting and depressing in equal measure. The latest entry being the Soviet-style showtrial where the most senior civil servants refuse to answer questions under oath, or are stopped from doing so by “the party”.
It’s a daily occurrence now. The SNP led Scottish Government has infected society to such a level that checks and balances on their power is basically non existent. Senior civil servants? Either clamped or loyal.
The Green Party which is supposed to soften every bill they attempt to pass? Not interested In doing so because it risks ruining their shot at independence, which is their number one priority.
Our institutions? Led or propped up by SNP cheerleaders.
The media? Uninterested or incapable of holding the government to account.
The opposition parties? Useless and not interested in focusing on the main opponent.
Comedians, creatives, public figures? Either frightened of speaking out or fully paid up cultists.
The people? A worrying amount of them have been completely swept up by this sham of a party. On one hand they’ll happily encourage anglophobic to appease nutters while on the other, talking (lying) about how progressive they are to keep the middle classes and youth on side.
The SNP aren’t made of Teflon by accident. It was a careful thing. They targeted the institutions. They targeted the civil service. They structured society in a way to benefit their style of politics and campaigning. They say everything and nothing, in order to appease everyone.
They were helped along (and still are) by incompetent people in the media, and incompetent people in UK politics who opposed them. But things like the Salmond inquiry and the SQA scandal show just how hard it will be to dislodge them.
Despite these scandals, they continue to ride high in the polls. Their elected officials behave like buffoons on the internet and pontificate about how great they are, as if no one saw what they’ve been up to.
The sad reality is, they’re right. Not enough people notice it. They can get away with stuff that would see other politicians/parties get absolutely crucified. Worse still, swathes of Scottish people will stay silent on SNP incompetence but tear into others for the same.
I don’t know how we beat them. They’ve stacked the cards insanely in their favour. I don’t see a referendum anywhere on the horizon but I also don’t see an end to the limbo of constitutional nonsense we find ourselves in. Meanwhile our public services still crumble. Rant over.
