1/ If you're watching this contrived effort by Sara Gideon and her DC campaign to associate Senator Collins with problems at the USPS, here's a rundown of the facts.

Spoiler alert: It's not true.

2/ Sen Collins led a bipartisan effort in 2006 to save the USPS. GAO warned of $50-$60bil in unfunded retiree health benefits. The USPS was headed for what the GAO called a "death spiral," and the entire system was at risk.

3/ The 2006 Postal reform bill protected USPS retiree benefits without massive postal rate increases. This effort put the USPS on a path toward financial sustainability, and led the GAO to take the USPS off its "High-Risk" list.

4/ The very people attacking this bill right now were actually cosponsors: Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, and Patty Murray -- the top 3 Democrats in Senate leadership. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. Nancy Pelosi, Bernie Sanders, and all House Ds supported it.

5/ The USPS, the postal unions, and other major postal stakeholders helped to write the bill, and endorsed it as a path toward financial stability. Which it was.

6/ Now Gideon's team claims this bill's requirements caused the current funding crunch at USPS.

KEY POINT: The USPS has not made any of the required payments to the retiree health benefits fund for the past 9 years. So this claim is not only false, it's impossible.

7/ This attack from Sara Gideon is nothing more than a cynical contrivance from the serial fabricators who run her campaign from Washington, DC.
