🚨Werner vs Martial🚨
▶️{Thread}🗒📊

Unsure of who to lead your FPL squad for next season? Well I’m going to be comparing 2 new FPL forwards in new Chelsea 🔵 signing Timo Werner and Red Devil 😈 Anthony Martial!

Lets start with a basic overview of both players league campaigns in 19/20.

Martial:

Here are some stats from Timo Werners 2019/20 season:
Firstly here is Timos heat map. Despite starting 80+% of games as a centre forward its clear that Werner likes to attack on the left however I dont see this as a problem and I believe he will be the main man up top at chelsea.
Werner took on 2.9 shots per game and scored 0.8 per game out of these shots. He also missed 21 big chances over the season which shows there is room for improvement in terms of his already impressive goal scoring record. ⚽️⚽️⚽️
Werner also had 1.6 key passes per match and created 14 big chances for his teammates over the season resulting in 8 assists. This shows that Werner is a striker who not only scores goals he is very capable of getting assists adding to his fpl value.💵
Martial:
Martial started all his games at Centre forward although his heatmap shows similar to Werner he definitely drifts off to the left. Again be in no doubt that Martial is the main man up top for United justifying his recent change in position on FPL.
Martial scored 0.5 goals per match from 1.8 shots per game, significantly less than Werner. He also missed 10 Big chances. Martial created 8 big chances for his team mates and executed 1 key pass per match. Werner definitely has the upper hands in terms of goals and assists.⚽️🎯
Now lets look at some xg🔎
Werner:
xG: 23.45 (-4.55)⚽️
xA: 9.68 (+1.68)🎯
xg90: 0.75
xA90:0.31
Although Werner outperformed his xG he did so at a sustainable level for a striker of his quality. Underperforming on his xA suggests that he was unlucky to only get 8 assists!
Martial:
xG:13.24(-3.76)⚽️
xA:4.62 (-1.38)🎯
xG90:0.45
xA90:0.16
Martial also over performed on his xG and interestingly on his xA as well. Key takeaway from this is that Werner good better quality chances then Martial and both are great finishers.
📊Below is a diagram comparing the two:
Martial(🟢)
Werner(🔵)
Some of the comparisons we have already seen such as xG and Key passes although it is helpful to see a graphical version of this.
Werner is ahead in all categories although as the now Chelsea man played in a different league against different opponents it is difficult to tell how much he will replicate this in the EPL. Even still his numbers are extremely impressive and hard to look past.
Now I will be looking at some post lockdown form:
In 9 games Werner scored 7⚽️ and assisted 1🎯. Despite this he did blank in 4 of these games. He also managed to score a hatrick as well as a brace on the final day showing that Werner can also be a great captain choice!
Martial also played 9 games scoring 6⚽️ and assisting 4🎯. Martial had 2 more goal involvements and only blanked in 2 matches! Similarly he also got a hatrick and can also be a good captain pick! So both players finished the season on great form with Martial slightly edging it.
As the centre forwards for Chelsea🔵 and Man united😈 respectively, I thought I would look at the total attacking output of both teams. Chelsea scored 69 goals compared to Uniteds 66. Both teams had a similar number of goals and I would only expect this to increase next season.
Some final points to consider: Martial is not on penalties for United and while not certain there is a strong chance Werner will be Chelseas penalty taker.
In terms of rotation Werner is more at risk with Abraham and Giroud however I honestly don’t see this being an issue and expect Werner to be the main man. Martial should be safe from rotation with no serious threat from the Bench.
To conclude while I think both are excellent options and may end up owning both my self I would slightly prefer Werner due to his higher goal output and potential penalties however Martial is an excellent option who could easily hit 20+ league goals.
Hopefully this thread has given everyone something to think about and provided some decent insight into both players. Please consider Retweeting🤞if this was of any help and once again thanks for the support on this account👍 #fpl #fplcommunity
