My roommates and I (along with just about everyone else in Provo) are fed up with the predictably corrupt landlords and housing situation in Provo. Gonna lay out my thoughts/frustrations in this here thread—
We’ve had problems with Redstone Residential and now Aspen Ridge Management, two of the largest property management companies in the area.
Both companies have nickled and dimed us, refused to be liable for their own mistakes, and ultimately students are powerless

The core of the issue is economic, due to BYU’s extremely arbitrary housing rules (i.e. being “BYU approved”)
With a limited number of BYU approved spaces, and an excess of students needing housing— apartment complexes know that they’ll fill, regardless of how they treat tenants

This creates an awful atmosphere where management companies can prey on tenants and thrive, no matter how many 1 star reviews people leave after being fined for every ridiculously arbitrary cleaning check and what not
The mad tenant leaves, and someone else needs BYU housing

I get the feeling that BYU doesn’t see the awful relationship between tenants and property managers as part of their business
Given that BYU helpef create this housing cartel (for lack of a better term), I’d argue that it’s absolutely BYU’s ethical obligation to intervene

How? Well, BYU could simply audit each company to ensure fair treatment of students and threaten to remove BYU approved status if things are bad (which, they have been for a while)
I might feel different if I knew I was alone in my frustrations, but I’ve heard countless stories of shady business practices that leave me wondering how anyone involved could sincerely say that they’ve been “honest in their dealings with their fellow man”
Frankly, BYU (unintentionally, I’d like to believe) created this mess, &they should reevaluate the relationship held with these management companies (predatory towing companies too). Students shouldn’t have to accept that corrupt managers can/will fine them as much as possible
TL;DR the big property management companies that thrive because they’re “BYU Approved” have been mistreating students for way too long and BYU should intervene on behalf of the students
Here’s a detailed personal story highlighting something that happened to me (and represents the kinds of things that happen all the time to students in Provo)
I should clarify— By “landlords” I’m generally referring to the property management companies of Provo
And before I get any flak for “hating on BYU” let me just say that I love BYU and I’m sad that my time here is almost up! Just wishing for reasonable improvements
