Loving my new pin badge for my lanyard! Combined with my #NHSPrideBadge hopefully it will send the message to patients, plus family and staff, that I'm non-judgemental and ready to listen

Discrimination of minority groups in healthcare, through unconscious & conscious bias, is a huge problem. It causes significant disparity in statistics for both physical & mental health between different populations, with LGBTQ+ & BAME people most affected. #BeAware and #BeAnAlly
Young Asian women are more than twice as likely to commit suicide as young white women. Young black men are six times more likely than young white men to be sectioned for compulsory treatment under the Mental Health Act
Black women are 22% more likely to die of heart disease than white women. Black women have a higher mortality rate in childbirth even though there is no evidence that they're more likely to suffer complications
25% of LGBTQ+ patients have experienced negative comments from healthcare staff when accessing treatment, meaning 15% of LGBTQ+ people will avoid seeking treatment all together for fear of discrimination
>50% of LGBTQ+ people have depression and/or anxiety and almost half of trans identifying people have considered suicide
Fear of discrimination and lack of understanding are huge barriers to people with mental health conditions seeking healthcare, even for physical health issues
Women w/ anxiety are more likely to die from chest pain than women w/ no MH issues, because their physical health problem is passed off as a symptom of their MH condition & not properly investigated. An anxiety diagnosis doesn't mean they have health anxiety & should be dismissed
Depression cases have doubled in adults since lockdown. The mental health fall out of the pandemic is real & big, but the issues existed before Covid too. Be aware of these problems to reduce your unconscious bias and be a supportive healthcare professional #EndMentalHealthStigma
