/Excited to share our #Tweetorial about our research on #ICU family member #emotions and #coping strategies recently published in @accpchest. Here’s our #VisualAbstract

/ ICU family members experience significant #anxiety, #depression, and #PTSD that can last for months after the ICU experience. Family members are often asked to participate in making difficult decisions for their loved ones. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11588447/
/ From our clinical experiences, we saw that family members experience strong emotions while their loved one is in the ICU. We conducted a #mixedmethods study to understand the #emotional experiences and #coping strategies used by ICU family members.
/ We interviewed and surveyed 40 #ICU family members @umichmedicine and followed up with surveys at 3 months to assess for persistent symptoms of psychological distress.
/ We found that 2 out of 3 of family members had symptoms of psychological distress during the ICU experience and about 1 out of 2 had persistent symptoms 3 months later.
/ We used Paul Ekman’s work to classify emotions and found #ICU family members most commonly experienced 3 core emotions: sadness, anger, and fear. Happiness, disgust, and surprise were rarely mentioned. https://www.paulekman.com/resources/universal-facial-expressions/
/ Despite a wide array of experiences, family members used diverse #coping strategies during the #ICU experience.
/ Understanding the relationship between ICU experiences, emotional responses, and coping strategies used by family members in the ICU may offer targets to improve mental health #outcomes of #ICU family members.
