Nothing replaces the extensive training and assessment you get in residency. That’s why Sen. Hill authored (and passed) legislation requiring docs finish 3 years of residency. Now #AB890 seeks to allow NPs to practice with zero. We need to grow the health care team, not divide it
#AB890 is being pushed by large corporate interests who seek to profit from employing NPs. Some, like Walgreens, CVS, & Wal-Mart have even stated that in the press. This bill would allow these folks to employ NPs, in the name of profit. Doctors in CA aren’t employed.
Any narrative that states expanding NP scope will improve access is silly. States that have fallen for this narrative haven’t see NPs moving practices into rural/underserved areas in a meaningful way. Any potential “savings” is also absorbed by an increase in testing.
If you want a CPA or CFO making medical decisions, #AB890 is your legislation. We need to be honest about what this all would look like, in practice.
