Anyone out there being critical of SK teachers, just know that the teacher in my house dropped almost $500 today on PPE supplies and an air purification system for his classroom to protect other people’s kids, because @PremierScottMoe @GordWyant and the @SaskParty won’t. #skpoli
Big YES to those pointing out that teachers spend tons of their own money (and time and other resources) filling in the budget gaps even at the best of times. And they do it for literally no other reason than to make life better for your kids.
This is going to really embarrass my husband, but whatever. People need to be reminded about who teachers are. Some anecdotes:
When we were first married, I found a stash of snacks and drinks in a cupboard and asked my husband what the deal was. He taught elementary at the time, and always kept that stuff around to bring to school for the kids who regularly showed up without anything to eat for the day.
He teaches high school now, and on more than one occasion he has come home hungry because he gave his lunch away.
For an entire school year he quietly kept a little grooming/hygiene setup for a little girl in his class who came to school clearly needing it. He made sure she had everything to go discreetly brush her teeth and comb her hair and clean up for school when she arrived every day.
He’s coached basketball for more than 10 years, spending hundreds of extra hours in the year on evenings and weekends putting so much time and energy into those student athletes.
At parent conferences, every single year without fail he has someone tell him that he’s changed their kid’s life for the better. These are just a few of many stories I could tell. No one knows these things but me (until now I guess) because he doesn’t make a show of it.
I’m tooting my husband’s horn, but let’s be clear about something: he’s not a special anomaly. This is typical. This is what teachers everywhere are CONSTANTLY doing. Spending their time, and money, and emotional labor making sure kids are ok and happy and cared for...
... while also, you know, teaching them a whole educational curriculum. The people who are caring for and teaching our next generation every day deserve so much better.
Teachers - I see you and I appreciate you for all of the things you do that no one will ever know about or see, because you do it for the kids. This Twitter thread aside, our house will go back to doing the same.
