Let's talk about the importance of diversity in the workplace from a marketing standpoint. You ever walk into a business and everyone is the same race. I am not talking about a Chinese food restaurant or a small business where employees could be friends and family.
I am talking about a business big enough where they would have to hire outside their circle of friends and family. ie, post jobs externally. If you walk into a business like this and all those jobs are of the same race, what do you think? If u r not of that same race
would you think ur kids, if you have kids would be given an opportunity to work there? If the answer is no, are you going to want to continue to spend ur money at a place that doesn't appear to hire outside a specific race? I am not saying this is the reality of the business.
I am just pointing out how someone of a different race might view that business. Can my kids work here? Hence from a marketing standpoint the lack of diversity in employees could give the perception of a business not being inclusive in its hiring.
The way I look at hiring is over a 5 to 10 year period, jobs posted externally, that don't fit within the friends and family circle, should match the demographic of those within driving distance of the location of the job if best available without biases are hired.
I say 5 to 10 years because there are times when best available could lead to a workplace with people of one race but over a long enough period of time there should be some diversity. If there isn't, it could create some negative perceptions about those that run the business.
Those negative perceptions could lead to people choosing other companies with a more inclusive workplace to shop at. What are your thoughts about the importance of diversity in the workplace? #BornOfIce
