adulthood is realizing that a lot of what you were told in school isn't even wrong per se, rather it's impossible to actually *know*
I *know* very little because the amount of investigation it takes to be confident, to be certain, about any matter of immediate import is truly staggering
whenever I've dug into a hot-button issue I've discovered that everyone who prominently yelled about it was misrepresenting things in order to bludgeon ill-informed people toward their perspective, and that actually the issue was a snarl of tradeoffs and misaligned incentives
I say "any matter of immediate import" because there are plenty of empirical questions that no one cares about enough to distort, and I think you can have a fair bit of low-effort confidence in those. the trick is being able to ID which is which
