A narrative that should be countered is that, before universal suffrage, women were oppressed.

It should be obvious to say that the oppressors must hate the subject of their oppression. Otherwise why/how could the oppression take place?
So to believe women were oppressed in the past you must believe the following:
Husbands hated their wives.
Fathers hated their daughters.
Sons hated their mothers.
Brothers hated their sisters.
Since this would make no psychological sense, women weren’t hated thus not oppressed
