Atrocity Exhibition explained (a thread):
The album begins with Downward spiral, and its HUGE in establishing the theme of this album. The overarching concept is that danny is on downward spiral in his life, this song shows that by telling stories of him on drugs and making references to the symptoms of using hard drugs.
It’s especially evident in the first verse of the whole album, as what he describes not only sounds unhealthy but are clear effects of drug abuse. Paranoia, excessive sweating, and hearing voices, are all symptoms of drug abuse. He even says that he only uses his phone for drugs.
The next track, Tell me what I don’t know does a great job establishing Danny’s background in a more calm understandable manner, it adds ethos to what he says about drugs and tells stories of people getting shot, and how he consistently has had to have weapons on him.
Rolling stone is about his lonely lifestyle. This song does a great job thematically with showing his descent into darkness, by talking about his insane life. A Few more songs go by, which further acknowledge him on his downward spiral.
On ain’t it funny He acknowledges the bad habits hes developed and that he cannot change without serious help. He drives this even further by laughing about it in the song which makes his persona seem even crazier on this downward spiral.
Ain’t it funny also has a music video that’s both hilarious and scary. It’s a sitcom where Danny plays the messed up uncle and tries to deal with a drug addiction in a place not providing sufficient support for him. It’s a great video I would highly recommend it.
On the following song, Goldust he discusses in depth more about drug abuse-which again adds to the themes present. During The song white lines He discusses things that have happened to him due to his frequent use of cocaine, and makes the theme as a whole even more potent.
Here is a concerning verse off of goldust where he goes as far to say adderall is his lunch, and he wants to follow it up by smoking weed and snorting cocaine
On dancing in the water He uses dancing in the water without getting wet as a metaphor for surviving insane drug experiences. He is admitting how lucky he is to be surviving in his lifestyle, but he’s not quite ready to stop yet.
On when it rain The hook saying “when it rain when it pour” also perfectly aligns with the albums concept, in that it’s saying rain often turns into pouring, just how it’s easy to fall off in life-part of a downward spiral that he’s been preaching since the beginning of the album
Today is big, it is a song about death. It discusses how soon life could end and how fragile it is, it maintains the same pessimistic mindset present throughout the rest of the album-which is a grand scale reference to adderall depleting the brain of dopamine.
Get hi is a bit of advice from Danny, he doesn’t try to say drugs are bad, he simply says if you want your pain to fade you should be like him and just smoke until you feel better. (1/2)
There’s an element of satire present that makes this song all the more entertaining. His self awareness about his addiction is really starting to come to fruition. (2/2)
The finishing track, hell for it, is a perfect way to end the album, through his entire downward spiral throughout the album, he finishes by saying he Wont go down without a fight, and isn’t ready to let the success go just because he can’t get off drugs. (1/2)
It wraps up the whole message and theme of the album so concisely. He also says he plans on giving everything he can to his music and creating the best music he can. (2/2)
The story this album tells is incredible, In the start we see Danny falling into a downward spiral, and through various stories and metaphors for his drug abuse it just gets worse and worse. (1/3)
Throughout the project he becomes increasingly self aware until the end when he acknowledges to the listener it’s too much. He then says that he plans on giving his music his all, and not letting himself die anytime soon. It’s the perfect ending to such a dark album. (2/3)
By the end he still has a long way to go in his battle against his drug abuse, but he’s okay with that and is gonna fight. (3/3)
